Pre-Purchase Inspections

Independent pre-purchase inspections across the Temecula Valley - dealer lots, private sellers and auction pickups. Scan tool, undercarriage, paint depth and a written report before you sign.

We meet you at the car - dealer lot or private seller - and give you a written report with photos before you sign anything, usually within a couple of hours of the call.

At A Glance

  • Full scan of every module, including stored and pending codes the dealer just cleared
  • Undercarriage, frame, fluid leaks, tire dates, brake life and paint depth readings
  • Road test for drivability, transmission behavior and noises the seller talks over
  • A written report and photos you can use to walk away or to negotiate

Why an independent set of eyes

A seller's inspection is a sales document. Ours is not - we do not sell cars, we do not get a referral fee, and we have no reason to tell you a car is fine when it is not. Several times a year we tell somebody to walk away from a car that looked perfect on the lot, and that call is the cheapest money they spend that month.

We are equally happy to tell you a car is a good buy. Most of them are. What you are paying for is knowing which one you are looking at.

What gets checked

Scan tool on every module first, because a cleared code leaves readiness monitors incomplete and that pattern is very visible. Freeze frame data for anything stored. Then the car itself: fluid condition and leaks, undercarriage and frame rails for accident repair or corrosion, suspension play, brake pad and rotor life, tire brand mismatch and manufacture dates.

Paint depth readings around every panel show respray and filler that a walk-around will not. Panel gaps, bolt heads and seam sealer tell you whether the car has been apart. Interior electronics all get operated. Then a road test - cold start behavior, transmission shift quality, braking, steering, and the noises that mysteriously appear once the seller stops talking.

Where we will meet you

Anywhere in the Temecula Valley: the dealership rows along Ynez Road and DePortola, private sellers at their home in Murrieta or Menifee, and cars sitting at auction lots and wholesalers. If the seller will not let an independent mechanic look at the car, that is information too.

Bring the report to the negotiation. A documented list of what the car needs is the strongest position you can be in, and it very often pays for the inspection several times over.

FAQ

Common Questions

How much is a pre-purchase inspection?

Typically $150 to $250 depending on the vehicle and how far out it is. Exotic and heavily modified cars take longer. We quote before we drive out.

How quickly can you get there?

Often the same day. Good used cars in this market do not sit around, so tell us the timeline when you call and we will work to it.

Will the dealer let you inspect it?

Almost all of them will, and the good ones expect it. A dealer who refuses an independent inspection is telling you something about the car.

Do you inspect motorcycles and trucks too?

Yes - bikes, trucks, vans and RVs. Tell us what it is when you book so we bring the right equipment.
