This is the single most expensive piece of advice we give away for free. A modern aluminum head on an aluminum block does not tolerate heat. Once the temperature gauge is past the top of the normal band you have minutes, not miles. Pull over, shut it off, and let it cool.
The repair you are avoiding by not driving it is usually a $200 to $600 cooling job. The repair you get if you push on is a head gasket, a warped head, or a whole engine. We would rather come to you at the side of Winchester Road than quote you a long block next week.
Coolant loss with no puddle is normal on a small leak - it evaporates off a hot engine before it hits the ground. A pressure tester puts the system under working pressure cold, and the leak shows itself: a weeping radiator seam, a water pump weep hole, a hose end, a heater core letting go inside the dash, or nothing at all, which points at a head gasket and gets confirmed with a combustion leak test.
Fans matter too. A car that runs fine at 65 on the 15 and overheats crawling through Old Town has a fan or fan clutch problem, not a radiator problem. The symptom pattern tells you where to look before you touch a tool.
Radiators on most cars are a two to three hour job: bumper cover or grille off for access, transmission cooler lines disconnected carefully, old unit out, new one in, system filled and bled. The bleed matters - an air pocket in the heater core or at the thermostat will make a perfectly good repair overheat.
Water pumps range from straightforward to a timing job, depending on whether yours is belt-driven off the front or chain-driven behind the timing cover. We tell you which one your engine has before we quote, because the difference is hours.
Photographs from our own cooling system work across the Temecula Valley. Plates and VINs are redacted; nothing here is stock.
Airflow. At speed the radiator gets air whether the fan works or not; in traffic it needs the fan. That points at a fan motor, fan clutch, relay or fan control module rather than the radiator itself.
In an emergency, water gets you off the road safely. It is not a fix - it dilutes the corrosion inhibitors and lowers the boiling point. Get the leak found before the next hot day.
Two to three hours on most cars including the fill and bleed. We bring the coolant, the new radiator and a catch pan, and we clean up any spill before we leave.
Every few years, yes. Coolant additives deplete and old coolant turns acidic, which eats water pump seals, heater cores and radiator end tanks from the inside. It is cheap insurance on an expensive system.
A proper diagnosis in the Temecula Valley runs $95 to $150, takes about an hour at your curb, and that fee comes straight off the repair if you have us do the work.
