Can Someone Come Out to Change a Tire?

Four kinds of help will come to you in the Temecula Valley. One of them is free on our freeways at rush hour. Here is who to call, from where you are sitting right now.

Published
Yes. In the Temecula Valley four kinds of help will come out for a flat. Your roadside plan (AAA, your insurer or your carmaker), the free Freeway Service Patrol on I-15 and I-215 during weekday commute hours, a mobile tire shop, or a tow. AAA will change it at your home, work or the roadside if you have a usable spare, and tow you if you do not, per AAA Southern California.

  • Roadside plans change the flat only if you have a usable spare, else they tow
  • Mobile tire shops bring the tire machine, which matters when you have no spare
  • A plug alone is not a proper repair, per the tire makers' own rules
  • Since January 1, 2026, California drivers must move over for any stopped car with hazards on

The Short Version

We work on cars in driveways and office lots across the Temecula Valley every day. The question we hear most from a driver with a flat is not how to change it. It is who to call. The answer depends on two things. Where are you stuck, and do you have a spare you can trust?

Most of the pages that rank for this question are tire chains selling installs, or a single roadside club selling a membership. None of them tell a driver in Murrieta that a free patrol truck may already be on its way down the freeway. So here is the whole list, worst spot first.

First, Get Safe. The Tire Can Wait

A flat on the 15 is not a tire problem first. It is a traffic problem. The Riverside County Transportation Commission (RCTC) tells drivers to move to the median or the shoulder, out of traffic, and to stay in the car with the seat belt on. If the car cannot get out of the lanes, or you feel in danger, call 911 right away, per its Freeway Service Patrol page.

RCTC also points to the yellow call boxes along the freeway. Open the box, lift the phone and stay on the line. Never cross the freeway on foot to reach one.

Turn your hazards on. That now matters more than it used to. California's move over law, Vehicle Code 21809, was amended to cover any stopped vehicle showing hazard lights, cones, flares or reflectors, not just tow trucks and police. Drivers must change lanes away from you, or slow down when they cannot. The change took effect January 1, 2026, per the state code. The fine is up to $50, so it is a nudge, not a shield. Stay in the car.

Option 1. The Free Freeway Service Patrol

This is the free one. The Freeway Service Patrol is a fleet of tow trucks that drive the freeways at rush hour and help stuck drivers at no cost. RCTC lists what they do. They change a flat, jump a battery, refill a radiator and tape a hose, and give you a gallon of gas. If they cannot get you going, they tow you free to a CHP approved spot. They cannot tow you to a private repair shop.

Where they patrol matters for us down here. RCTC lists all of I-215, so Menifee, Sun City and Perris are covered. On I-15 the patrol runs from State Route 60 south to State Route 79, which is Temecula Parkway. That takes in Lake Elsinore, Wildomar, Murrieta and Temecula up to the Temecula Parkway exit. Break down south of Temecula Parkway, toward the county line, and you are outside the listed area. State Route 91 is covered too, plus a stretch of State Route 60.

When matters even more. The patrol runs Monday to Friday, 6 to 8:30 in the morning and 1:30 to 6 in the afternoon. On Fridays the afternoon shift starts at 11:30. No weekends and no holidays. You do not book them. They patrol and may spot you. Outside those hours, RCTC says to call 911 if you cannot reach your own help, and CHP will send a rotation tow at its standard rates.

Option 2. Your Roadside Plan

AAA Southern California covers Riverside County. It says it will change your flat at your home, your business or the side of the road, any time, if you have a spare. If you do not, or if the tech decides your spare is not safe, you get a tow instead. Bring a photo ID, because AAA asks for one at the call, per its flat tire service page.

Know the limits before you need them. AAA's own fine print says the main member gets up to four roadside calls per membership year, and each added member gets two. After that a service charge applies. Free towing reaches up to seven miles from where you broke down, or back to the shop giving the service. Two flats in a year are covered. A fifth call by the main member costs extra.

AAA is not the only plan. Look at your car insurance policy and your new car paperwork tonight, not on the shoulder. Some include roadside help and you may already be paying for it. Save the number in your phone under Flat Tire.

Option 3. A Mobile Tire Shop

A roadside tech swaps your flat for your spare. A mobile tire shop brings the tire machine. That is the difference that matters when there is no spare, or when you want the real fix done in your driveway instead of a doughnut and a second trip.

The big national names mostly sell scheduled installs of new tires, not rescue. Tire Rack says its vans mount and balance new tires at home or work, in about 15 minutes a tire, from $40 a tire, per its mobile installation page. Discount Tire says plainly it does not offer mobile tire repair, and as of October 12, 2026 its list of mobile install states did not include California, per its mobile installation page.

That leaves the local mobile tire operators in Temecula and Murrieta, and they vary. Before one drives out, ask three things. What is the total, in dollars? Do you fix the hole off the wheel, with a plug and a patch? Do you have my tire size, or am I paying for a used one?

No Spare in the Trunk? Check Today

Plenty of drivers find out they have no spare at the worst time. When AAA looked at 2017 model year cars, 28 percent did not come with a spare as standard. That year AAA helped more than 450,000 members whose cars had no spare, per the AAA newsroom on October 18, 2017.

Most of those cars carry an inflator kit instead. AAA says the kits only last four to eight years, and that a kit can cost up to ten times more than a tire repair. AAA's advice is plain. Do not assume the car has a spare, read the owner's manual on the kit, and check the date on it.

Take two minutes this week. Lift the trunk floor. Look for a spare, a jack and a lug wrench, or a kit with a date on it. If you have a spare, check its air when you check the other four. A flat spare is the same as no spare.

Plug, Patch or New Tire

Here is where a fast fix goes wrong. The tire makers' trade group, the U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association (USTMA), sets the rules most shops follow. A hole can be fixed only in the tread, and only up to 1/4 inch across. Damage that reaches into the shoulder, or runs at an angle into it, means the tire is done. The tire has to come off the wheel so the inside can be checked, per USTMA's tire repair basics.

The fix itself needs two parts. A plug fills the hole and a patch seals the inside. USTMA says a plug alone is not an acceptable repair. It also says never repair a tire from the outside while it is still on the wheel, and never repair over an old bad repair. Run flat tires may carry their own limits from the maker.

So a plug from a kit on the shoulder can get you home. It is not the repair. Get the tire looked at from the inside after.

Where a Mechanic Comes In

We are a mobile mechanic, not a tire shop, and we do not stock car tires. A flat is usually just a flat. Sometimes it is not. A tire that keeps losing air, wears on one edge, or a car that still pulls or grinds after the spare goes on can point to suspension and steering wear or a brake problem. That work we do at your curb, from Temecula to Menifee.

Our price ranges are posted, and you get a number before we start. Book a visit or call (951) 618-1982.

Questions Drivers Ask

Can someone come out to change my tire?

Yes. A roadside plan like AAA will change it at your home, work or the roadside if you have a usable spare. On the I-15 and I-215 in Riverside County, the free Freeway Service Patrol changes flats on weekday mornings and afternoons. A mobile tire shop can come out too, and a tow is the last resort.

How much does it cost to get someone to come change my tire?

The freeway patrol is free. A AAA Southern California membership covers four roadside calls a year for the main member and two for each added member, then a service charge applies. Mobile tire shops set their own prices. Tire Rack lists mobile installs of new tires from $40 a tire. Ask for the total before anyone drives out.

Can someone change my tire at home?

Yes. AAA says it will come to your home, your business or the side of the road. A mobile tire shop works at home too. It needs a flat, safe spot with room to open the doors and work around the wheel.

Who changes a flat tire for free?

In Riverside County, the Freeway Service Patrol does, on its covered freeways and hours. Your own roadside plan is also free to use up to its yearly limit. Check your insurance policy and your new car paperwork too. Some include roadside help.

What if my car has no spare tire?

Then a roadside tech can only tow you or use your inflator kit if the hole is small. AAA found 28 percent of 2017 model year cars had no spare as standard. Look in your trunk today so you know which plan you are on before the flat happens.

Can a tire with a nail in it be fixed?

Often, yes. Tire makers allow a repair only in the tread, for a hole up to 1/4 inch across. The tire has to come off the wheel to be checked, and the fix needs a plug and a patch together. A hole in the sidewall or shoulder means a new tire.

Stuck With More Than a Flat?

If the car will not start, grinds or pulls once the tire is sorted, tell us what it is doing. We come to your driveway or your office lot.
